Consider This Perspective on Remixing

Thanks to Christian for sharing this:

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to."

Considering RiP: A Remix Manifesto, let's talk about what this adds to our perspective on remixing.

Remix vs. Remediation

Articulate the differences and similarities between remix and remediation. Do you agree or disagree with Lessig's argument? What do you consider "appropriate/ethical" remediation/remix and "inappropriate/unethical" remediation/remix?

This is our final blog entry, so make it count friends!

Understanding Bolter and Grusin Remediation

Each group should post their key points from their assigned chapter.

What Does it Mean to Write in the 21st Century

Revisit and “update” your version of your theory of composing to include the role of technology. Think about all our authors. Remember what Johnson said in his chapter "Text," "I'm a typer not a writer." What does it mean to write in all the digital spaces that are available to us? And, what does it change about who we are as a writer?

Revisiting Our Theories of Composing

Think back to the "theories of composing" you have been constructing; what role, if any, did design/visual rhetoric play? Has your theory of composing changed--in what ways yes, in what ways no? What scholars are now informing your theories of composing? Do you see visual rhetoric/visual composition in your daily lives, and if so, in what ways?

So...What is visual rhetoric?

We've read McCloud and Faigley, so it's time to use our theorists and our own life experiences and compose a definition for visual rhetoric. We'll return to this question at the end of the week, so this week we'll do our free write on the blog so that we can all benefit from our different perspectives.

So, what is visual rhetoric?

Your Theory of Composing

Reflect on our readings and discussions and start to construct your own "Theory of Composing;" what does it mean to compose and to do so "effectively?" Draw on all the readings of the course thus far as well as your own life and educational experiences.

Our Definitions of Rhetoric...for now

Definitions of Rhetoric

Christian’s group: “Rhetoric being a way of altering reality by means of discourse in which following the five canons of rhetoric an audience can be persuaded to feel a certain way.”

Dana’s group: “The effective means of altering reality through persuasion dependent on the situation that the speaker is currently in.”

Erika’s group: “A situation that corresponds with historical knowledge and is interpreted by its audience in either a persuasive or argumentative fashion.”

Rachel’s group: “The blend of artistic and logical expression that invites discourse through which an audience can be persuaded.”

Class Remediation:

Rhetoric is the blend of artistic and logical expression that corresponds with a given context that has the potential to alter the audience’s perception of reality through persuasion.

Our beginning thoughts on Composition

Composition and A Theory of Composition

- Truth is always more interesting; less is more; it’s all in the details

- Take your audience into account

- Cohesion

- Have a new view on the subject

- Outlet for other emotions/energies

- Composition should be personal

- Composition is the craft of writing

- A unit of thought

- Does composition have a length requirement

- Could be essays and other forms of print media; music/songs; speeches; poetry; journals/diaries; blogging; vlogging

- Is spontaneous, personal writing really composition?

o Doesn’t matter if it’s publishable; it’s still composition
